The current emphasis of my laboratory is the association between microbiomes and human health. Specific topics include (i) the supragingival microbiome and the impact of HIV infection on childhood caries, (ii) the urethra microbiome and the impact of menopause on recurrent urinary tract infections, and (iii) the microbiome within water cooling towers and its relationship with Legionnaires' Disease. For human associated microbiomes, we are particularly interested in developing high resolution DNA sequencing approaches to elucidate strain level taxonomic diversity dynamics and metabolic activity within these ecosystems.
